Indoor camping

Stuck indoors? Why not make it feel like the outdoors?! Earlier this year we created an entire guide to indoor camping, and it’s easily one of the best things to do when you’re stuck inside. Move all the furniture, pop the tent right in the living room and plan a picnic dinner! We even have the cutest campfire pajamas to snuggle up in.

Bake something delicious

Freshly baked cookies are the fastest way to put a smile on your face. Get the kids involved and don’t be afraid to make a mess! Who’s going to see it anyway?

Break out the board games

Board games are the perfect rainy day activity. These days there are board games for all ages and any number of players. So whether the whole family is at home or it’s just you and the kids, we’re sure there’s a board game out there that would captivate hours of your family’s rainy day!

Some of the all time most popular board games for kids are:

  • Candy Land
  • Monopoly Junior
  • Sorry!
  • Chutes and Ladders
  • Trouble

But some new games that we have loved are:

  • Do You Really Know Your Family?
  • Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza
  • Last Defense
  • Guess in 10 Junior Animal Kingdom
  • Mighty Fun! Brain Freeze

Have a dance party

Need to get out some of that crazy energy but you’re stuck indoors? Turn on your birdies favorite tunes and dance around in your living room! You can dance, you can sing, you can just chase each other around to your favorite songs.

This is one of those activities that you can do rain or shine, and it’s sure to get the whole family laughing.

Have a pajama day

Put on your most comfy pair of pajamas (preferably a matching set from Birdie Bean) and stay in them all day. What a luxury! You’re not going out today, you might as well stay comfy.

Make homemade ice cream

We recently shared the easiest way to make homemade ice cream, with three different ice cream flavors and an entire guide to ice cream sundaes. Homemade ice cream is about to be your new favorite rainy day activity.

Binge watch your favorite movies

Break out the snacks because there is nothing better than a binge watch! You don’t have to go screen free on a rainy day, you can do the opposite in fact. And to make this even more fun, you can combine a few of our rainy day activities – bake some cookies, put on your most comfy pajamas, and start watching your family’s favorite movies.

Don’t forget to pull all of the blankets and pillows together to cuddle up on the couch.

Have an arts and crafts session

Break out the arts and crafts. There’s no better time than a rainy day, when you’re stuck indoors, to ramp up your family’s creativity. We love this list of craft ideas from Good Housekeeping (there are 50 crafts to choose from). And a lot of them can be done with elements you probably already have at home. Use up those toilet paper rolls you’ve been saving or the leftover popsicle sticks and get crafting.

Create an indoor scavenger hunt

The best part about an indoor scavenger hunt is that you can make it as easy or as complex as you like – which means it can occupy a lot of your kids' time on a rainy day. Create clues, hide them in envelopes and number them so the kids know what set they’re on. Make sure there’s a great prize at the end to really keep them entertained.

Make a family bucket list

Making a bucket list as a family can be such a fun way to see what each of your kids is interested in doing together as a family. Would they like to visit the beach? One day take a trip to Disneyland or go on a great camping trip? This is a great way to get everyone excited about future family adventures!

Make homemade pizza

Personalized homemade pizza used to be our favorite thing when we were kids. You get to pick your toppings, no arguing with your siblings over pineapple. And it’s such a fun way to get your kids involved in the cooking. They can help knead the dough, sprinkle on as much cheese as they want, and of course, choose their toppings.

We’ve loved turning this tradition from our own childhood into a rainy day activity for the whole family.

Your new family slogan? “When it rains, we make pizza”

Here's a super easy homemade pizza dough recipe

There are plenty of activities that you can do to help keep your kids entertained on a rainy day. Instead of feeling cooped up all day, we hope that these activities will help you feel excited the next time you wake up and the skies are gray.
