Now, let’s dive right in.
What are the benefits of golf and pickleball for kids?
These sports are unique in the ways that they help our little birdies. They’re both great for teaching kids fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Golf is great at teaching spatial awareness, while also helping kids practice calm, patient game play. Pickleball however requires kids to focus, stay on their feet and get sweaty. And even though golf may not seem like it, it’s still an activity that requires a lot of movement and muscle coordination.
Both games encourage kids to spend more time outside, which has so many benefits to their health.
With the rise of activities like crazy golf and TopGolf, there’s even more reason for golf to be an activity the whole family can enjoy. And most neighborhoods across the county are putting up pickleball courts – which means these skills you practice at home, can easily be played on a court.
Getting little ones excited about sports always starts at home! Use these fun golf and pickleball activities to help your kids play more this spring.
Home Mini Golf
With this home mini golf course, you’ll be able to create hours of fun from the leftover shoeboxes you have lying around the house. Make sure to get your kids involved in decorating each ‘hole’. You can even use leftover paper towel/toilet paper rolls to make golf clubs.
Gather your empty boxes, paper towel rolls, construction paper, paints and brushes and get creative with making your own home mini golfing range. You could set this up indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather, making this the perfect spring activity.
DIY Putting Range
For something a bit simpler (and even easier to play indoors), create your own putting range. This activity will help your kids develop the hand-eye coordination they need to really enjoy golf – and while feeling like a fun carnival game they can try again and again.
There are plenty of things to love about this indoor putting range. It’s affordable to make, easy to set up, works well in small spaces – and once you’ve set it up, it requires little to no maintenance from you. Which means you can leave the kids to play and have more time to tackle your day.

Host a home pickleball tournament
If you have a big enough backyard or park near your home, you can host your own home pickleball tournament for the kids. This can be a fun way to get your kids excited about pickleball – without the pressure of going to play on a court.
Balls aren’t going to bounce well on the grass, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a lot of fun trying. Besides, this can be a great opportunity to get kids practice serving, hitting the ball back and forth to each other, and staying on their toes to hit a ball before the bounce.
You’ll just need a couple of paddles, balls and some tape or cones to mark out your court on the grass. Once your kids see how fun pickleball is, and get comfortable with the basics, you can take them to a court for an evening of family fun.
This example is going to be a little bit too intense for little kids – but they give you an idea of how you could turn any grassy area into a pickleball court.
Adapt pickleball mini games for home play
Let’s face it, pickleball is not a game you want the kids to play inside. But there are some pickleball mini games and drills that you can adapt for home play. Pickle Land has tons of resources for teaching kids how to play pickleball, but today we’re just going to share a few that would work from home!
1. Sneaky and Chipmunk
This mini game is perfect for helping kids see the balls coming and adjust their coordination and movement to catch them. According to Pickle Land, you (sneaky) will toss the balls to your kids (chipmunk) and they’ll practice catching them with both hands. You can increase the difficulty by adjusting the height or pretending to throw the ball instead of actually throwing it.
2. Don’t Drop the Dinner
In this game, your little one will pretend to be a server delivering a meal (the ball) on their tray (the paddle), without dropping it! This can be easily played indoors on rainy spring days – and helps your kids learn paddle control and how the paddle angle and movement affects the ball.
3. Bucket Ball
For this pickleball mini game, set up a bucket at one end of the backyard and have your kid stand at the other end. They can practice hitting the ball while trying to land it in the bucket. This will definitely help improve their aim and accuracy, but it can be frustrating for little ones. We recommend starting with the bucket closer to them, and then slowly moving the bucket further away as they improve.
